A Master Class in Alaska Fly Fishing

The Alaska Fly Fishing Academy is an advanced course for fly fishers wanting to improve their fly-fishing skills. This five-day course will provide in-depth instruction on strategies and tactics proven to catch more and bigger fish. This is a learn by doing academy where enrollees will spend five days on some of Alaska’s premier rivers. These are blue ribbon fisheries where you will apply newly acquired skills to catch trophy Rainbows, Grayling and Dolly Varden; skills that will improve your fishing experience on any river.

What you will learn:

  • How to correctly rig up for dry fly, streamer and nymph style fishing.
  • How to present dry flies, streamers and subsurface offerings (nymphs, egg patterns, etc.)
  • Advanced casting techniques adapted to the type of fly type and stream environment.
  • Tactics and techniques that will improve your presentations and drifts.
  • How to locate fish in a stream under various conditions.
  • Managing the drift to maximize the effective presentation, i.e., increase the time your offering is in the fish’s strike zone.
  • Ideal hook setting techniques for all types of fly fishing.
  • Landing wild rainbows for maximum effectiveness and catch and release survivability.

The Academy includes:

  • Five days on the water with a professional instructor/guide.
  • Six nights in an on-site cabin*.
  • Travel from your cabin to the water.
  • All instructional materials including, flies, tippet, leader and other terminal tackle.
  • Three days on local streams, float or walk and wade.
  • Two fly-out days to wilderness trophy water.

* These are dry cabins with community bath and toilet accommodations. Cabins include two double beds, small refrigerator and coffee maker. There is a grill, picnic table and gazebo on the cabin property for your use.

What you need to bring:

  • Waders and boots (felt soles are prohibited in Alaska).
  • Rod and reel (5wt or 6wt) with floating fly line.
  • Tools (nippers, forceps, etc.)
  • Quality Rain Jacket.
  • Small water resistant backpack.
  • Lunch and beverages for each day.

We have no doubt that you will catch quality wild fish during the academy and leave with improved fly-fishing skills that you can successfully apply to your home water and rivers around the world. Dates and space are limited, so enroll early for the 2022 season.

These are Monday through Friday dates. You will need to make travel arrangements to arrive at the cabins, four miles south of Talkeetna, AK, on the Sunday prior and depart the Saturday following. Talkeetna is a two-hour drive north from Anchorage. You can shop for groceries and supplies in Wasilla, AK on the drive up to Talkeetna.

Cost for the week-long Alaska Fly Fishing Academy is $4,500 per person based on a two-person enrollment.
